Welcome to Tikehau, a small atoll of 30 square miles where life is peaceful and tranquility reigns. Step off the airplane into a turquoise and blue paradise where you can relax and forget about the stresses and strains of modern life. Here’s our suggestion of what to do and see on a 3 day break in Tikehau.

Day 1

Part 1

Discovery

Tikehau is a small atoll that you can easily visit on foot or by bike. Take a stroll to the main village, say hello to the locals and admire the magnificent scenery. Walk to the ocean side of the atoll where you’ll see some superb coral cliffs. Eat at a snackbar then go to the beach for a short nap.

Day 1

Part 2

Fishermen’s village

When you’ve fully digested lunch, take a boat trip to fishermen’s village. Situated at the entry to the pass on motu Tueava, there is a small quay and a few houses where some fishermen and their families live all year round. They’ll take you out fishing and you’re sure to come back with more than enough for your evening meal. You can also go snorkeling or surfing while you’re visiting the motu.

Day 2

Part 1

Diving in the pass

Famed for having more fish than any other atoll in The Islands of Tahiti, Tikehau is an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. The dive site in Tuheiava pass is suitable for divers of all levels. Barracudas, tuna and moray eels are part of the magnificent variety of marine life in the pass. There are three dive centers on the island.

Day 2

Part 2

Hina’s bell

After a morning spent in the water, come back to shore and go for a long walk along the beach, on the ocean side of the atoll. You’ll come to some enormous blocks of coral sitting on the sandy beach. In front of you the waves of the mighty ocean crash onto the reef. In the south of the atoll, you’ll find Hina’s bell. It’s a natural pool formed by blocks of coral several feet high, which the islanders call fe’o. Legend has it that Hina, a very popular young girl who later became queen, used to bathe herself in the pool.

Day 3

A day on the lagoon

Go for a day trip on the lagoon. Start early and visit a motu where you can go snorkeling with manta rays. Then your guide will take you for a swim in a coral garden before stopping at bird island, to observe the red-footed boobies and brown noddies. Lunch is a delicious picnic on the motu at the water’s edge. At the end of the afternoon, go to the magnificent pink sand motu for a refreshing swim and a photo session.
