Bora Bora, a name that dreams are made of, a name that evokes the paradise of The Islands of Tahiti. It is one of the most famous islands in the world, and also one of the most beautiful. In Bora Bora, the air is filled with romance, and it is the perfect setting for a honeymoon or a vacation ‘à deux’. But the island has far more to offer as well, and is a dream destination whether you’re in a group, with family, or traveling on your own.

A crystal clear turquoise lagoon (very possibly the most beautiful in the world), coral gardens, white sandy beaches and plenty for you to do; hiking, visiting the numerous small islets, called motu in Tahitian, lazing in the tropical sun, going for an evening stroll along the shore, visiting a spa, eating out in one of the fine restaurants, taking a boat trip on the lagoon and just feeling privileged to be in one of the world’s most famous beauty spots, Bora Bora, the Pearl of the Pacific. The island has three districts: Anau, Faanui and Vaitape, the ‘capital’, where you’ll find craft workshops displaying thework of local craftsmen and women: seashell jewelry, colorful pareos, wooden sculptures, perfumed oils and soaps and magnificent Tahitian cultured pearls.

What makes it so special?

Located in the Society Islands of French Polynesia, Bora Bora , with its magnificent, turquoise lagoon is a veritable island paradise. To get there, you can catch a domestic flight from Tahiti-Faa’a or Moorea (50 minutes), or from Huahine or Raiatea (20 minutes). And wherever you choose to lay your head, you’re sure to wake up the next day in a little corner of paradise.

Bora Bora, a romantic paradise

Bora Bora is a paradise for lovers and, like Paris, the ideal honeymoon destination. The imposing majesty of Mount Otemanu welcomes visitors, standing proudly in the middle of a lagoon of the clearest water, in all the possible shades of turquoise and blue. The lagoon is ringed with a coral reef dotted with small, idyllic islets, called motu, where overwater bungalows look back at Mount Otemanu from the pure, soft, white sandy beach.

If you want even more romantic surroundings, then you can visit Tupai, which is only about 12 miles to the north of Bora Bora. Tupai is famous for being a heart-shaped atoll. As there are neither inhabitants nor tourist facilities on the atoll, your visit will be for just one day, but what a romantic day! You can get there by catamaran or helicopter.

Tattooing, art and dance in Bora Bora

Visitors to The Islands of Tahiti soon come to understand that the Tahitian language and the Polynesian way of life revolve around a rich and vibrant culture, which includes tattooing, and dance. Both of these arts are visual representations of the history of the ancestors of the islanders. Many visitors learn some of the basic dance steps while they are here, and even more take home a tattoo as a permanent souvenir of their stay in this magical, mystical, paradise.

The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word, tatau. Each tattoo has its own meaning and recounts a personal or ancestral story of significance to its wearer. Tattoos have always been an important part of Tahitian culture, as have the to’ere, fa’atete and pahu drums and ukuleles which provide the rhythmic music for ‘ori, the traditional dance of The Islands of Tahiti. In Bora Bora, you can best admire this vibrant culture during the annual heiva festivities in July.

Tiare flowers and overwater bungalows

Bora Bora, one of 118 islands in French Polynesia, is famed for its beauty and the richness of its vibrant culture. The inhabitants welcome visitors with garlands of aromatic tiare Tahiti flowers, warm smiles, music and traditional dancing. Bora Bora is the island paradise that you’ve always dreamed of.

Bora Bora is the home of the overwater bungalow. This exotic form of accommodation, was invented here in 1967 and can now be found all over the world. The perfect setting for a romantic vacation, with a private terrace which has its own access directly into the lagoon, for an early morning swim together before breakfast. And in the evening, you can relax on the terrace with a cocktail and watch the glorious sunset over Mount Otemanu. Some bungalows even have a window fitted into the flooring through which you can marvel at the tropical fish.

The spiritual force of mana in Bora Bora

During your visit to Bora Bora, don’t be surprised if you feel a strange sensation at times. This is the Mana, the spiritual force at the center of Polynesian beliefs. It is another Tahitian word, along with tattoo, that has entered the English language. Mana is a concept that isn’t easy to understand, but is an inner strength which links all living beings to their past. It is a physical, mental and emotional force that binds Tahitians to their cultural identity.
